Andrew M. Gardner

Andrew M. Gardner, of Finesville (Pohatcong/Phillipsburg), NJ, passed away peacefully at home on June 22, 2022 — his 64th birthday — after a courageous 15-month journey with glioblastoma multiforme. At his side throughout was his devoted life partner, Carla Huelsenbeck.

A remarkably gifted photographer and true music aficionado, Andrew was a kind, gentle, humble, caring soul who always gave freely of himself and was deeply loved by the many, many friends who were touched by his immeasurable kindness, honesty, compassion, intelligence, and humor. He was deeply committed to being of service and helping others in the rooms by openly sharing his story and listening without judgment. He was also loved by cats and dogs alike — so much so that many friends called him the pet whisperer.

Andrew was born in Bromsgrove (Birmingham), England, in 1958 to the late Sheila Ann (Edwards) Gardner and Graham W. Gardner. The family moved to the US when Andrew was a toddler, and he grew up in Montvale, NJ. After graduating from high school (PHHS class of 1976), he moved to NYC and began his life's great adventure. He lived in various Manhattan and Brooklyn neighborhoods, and a few other places over the years, before settling in ("Everything's fine in") Finesville. He loved meeting people, seeing new places, and experiencing new things, but he was equally happy tucked in at home, passing the days taking long walks, cooking (and eating) good food (he was our curry expert and baker), reading, and listening to music.

In addition to Carla, Andrew is survived by his daughter, Ella Gardner, and his son, Ian Gardner, as well as his father and four brothers.

There will be no services at this time, although friends hope to organize a tribute down the road. Those who wish to honor Andrew's memory are encouraged to donate in his name to organizations that support music, the arts, or animal welfare.
