Elizabeth Carter Bowman experienced her transition on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
Elizabeth was born on January 30, 1940 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the second child born to Emmanual Murray and Elsie Smith Murray.
Elizabeth received her early education from Saint Elizabeth Catholic and James G. Blaine public elementary schools. She excelled as a student and received recognition for her academic performance. Elizabeth graduated first in her class from Murrell Dobbins Vocational High School in 1957.
After high school, Elizabeth began a very successful career as a federal government employee. She worked in the Department of Agriculture, the Social Security Administration, and ultimately retired from the Department of Health and Human Services where she held a position as a Regional Training Manager. In her leisure time, Elizabeth found enjoyment in gardening and interior design; this was displayed in and outside of her home.
Elizabeth was a devoted wife to the late George Carter who preceded her in 1996, and loving and supportive mom to Regina and Dana. One of the highlights of her life was the relationship she had with her grandsons, Evan and Myles. Elizabeth was proud of their many accomplishments and spoke of them often. In her post-retirement years, Elizabeth formed good friendships with coworkers and customers at Strawbridge’s and Macy’s where she was a popular part-time sales associate. She liked to stay connected to her family and friends through social media and attended holiday gatherings and family functions. Elizabeth had a quick wit, generous laugh, and a great fashion sense. Conversations with her were easy and genuine.
Elizabeth leaves a legacy of love and appreciation to her daughters Regina Blair (Rodney) and Dana Carter; her grandsons James Evan Blair and Myles Xavier Blair; sisters Elsie Murray Coston (deceased) and Dr. Catherine Murray Hence; nephews Albert F. Coston (Tammy), Dr. Andrew F. Coston, Robert Lee Hence, III (deceased), Dr. Anthony F. Coston (Francine), and Arthur F. Coston; nieces Kisha Hence and Kia Long (Anthony), and a host of great nieces, great nephews, and special friends.
