John Hamilton Slack, Age 92, of Bloomsbury, New Jersey, passed away at home on July 1, 2023, with his wife and dog by his side.
John was born on August 2, 1930 in Bethlehem Township, PA to John and Adah (Stephenson) Slack. He met and married the love of his life Margaret Mae (Hardy). On June 12, 2023, they celebrated their 75th Wedding Anniversary.
Together, they had 5 children: John & Carolann of Phillipsburg, Barry of Phillipsburg, Richard & Peggy of Easton, Susan Budd & Kevin of Bloomsbury, and David of Bloomsbury. He had 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and his dog Precious who all brought him great joy.
For decades, John was a dedicated leader, community servant, businessman, and agriculturist. He served as a Warren County Farmers Fair Director for 35 years, making sure he showcased his love of antique tractors. He served on the Pohatcong Township Counsel and various township committees over the years. He was a member of the Stewartsville Grange #121 and Warren Pomona Grange #10 for 39 years. In 2003, he was honored by Warren County Board of Agriculture and Warren County Soil Conservation with the Distinguished Service Award. John started J. H. Slack Electric Company in 1958 and later expanded it to include Slack Appliance. John’s love of farming began at age 9, when he started milking cows and driving a steel wheeled tractor. It continued in 1969 when he bought his own farm. It was this strong work ethic and sense of family values that he instilled in all his children.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 6th from 9 am to 12:30pm at Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church, funeral services follow at 1pm. John will be laid to rest in the Stewartsville Lutheran Cemetery. The Finegan Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements.
