Maria Palermo-Burd, 89, of Phillipsburg, NJ passed away on January 10 after being cared for by the wonderful staff at the Coventry Care Center in Lopatcong (thank you). She was born in Sommatino, Sicily in 1934 to the late MichaelAngelo and Enrichetta (LoNobile) Palermo. She met and married Daniel W. Gellock in 1954. They came to the United States shortly after and built a life in Phillipsburg. She and Daniel divorced in 1975 and he passed away in 1992. Maria met and married her second husband, Elmer Burd in 1994, who passed later that year.
She is survived by two of her three children, Patricia Fehley & Michael Gellock, of Phillipsburg, NJ; four sisters: Rosalia Mallimaci of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, AnnaMaria Verniero (Bill) of Bethlehem, PA, Tina Palermo of Clearwater, FL, & Silvana Phillips (Doug) of Roosevelt, UT, and two brothers- Leo (Ellen) of Bethlehem Township, PA, & Anthony (Marlette) of Kunkletown, PA. In addition, four grandchildren survive her: Sarah Pritchett (Brian) of Manville, NJ, Kelly Fehley (Bryan Bittenmaster), Daniel R. Gellock, Jr. (Stacey), & Jamie Gellock, all of Phillipsburg; five great-grandchildren- Brooke, Jaylen, Madyson, Login, and Daniel Richard III, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by a son, Daniel R. Gellock of Phillipsburg, brothers Salvatore “Oscar” and Filipo Palermo, of Italy, as well as a few nieces and nephews.
She worked as a seamstress for Strongwear Pants Company in Easton, PA from the time she came to the U.S. until she retired in the 1980s. In her free time and throughout retirement she enjoyed going out dancing, singing, playing Bingo, and to the casino.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 10– 12 Noon at the Finegan Funeral Home at 302 Heckman Street with a funeral service beginning at 12 Noon at the funeral home.
