William Ronald Piggott, 88, of Phillipsburg, died peacefully on December 24, 2023, at St. Luke’s Hospital – Warren Campus, Phillipsburg, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Sharon L. (Davis) Piggott, his sons, Kevin B. (Teresa) of Easton, PA, Mark O. (Georgiene) of Alexandria, VA, and his brother, James D. (Pat) of Phillipsburg. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Trina L. Reigle, and his brother, John T. Piggott III.
William was born in Phillipsburg on January 7, 1935, to John T. Piggott, Jr., and Beatrice M. (Purdy). He attended Phillipsburg High School (Class of 1953) and played on the football team. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in Freemansburg, PA, as an anti-aircraft artillery specialist in 1953. He reenlisted in the regular Marine Corps in 1954 as an Expeditionary Airfield Systems Technician. His tours of duty included Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC, Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Naval Air Station Lakehurst, NJ, Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, CA, and included four overseas deployments to Okinawa and Iwakuni, Japan, and Vietnam. William retired as a Master Sergeant in 1975 after 22 years of service.
In 1975, William went to work for his father at J.T. Piggott and Sons Utility Contractors in Phillipsburg. In 1982, he began working for Harmony Sand and Gravel in Harmony as a truck driver and mechanic for 34 years until he retired in 2016. He was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church of Bethlehem, PA, the Cherry Point Baptist Church, Havelock, NC, and the First Baptist Church of Kaneoha, Hawaii.
William is also survived by his loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. They include grandchildren, Meghan L. (Jason) Mann of Phillipsburg, Tyler W. Reigle of Phillipsburg, Cory J. Reigle of Phillipsburg, Melissa S. (Brandon) Werner of Bangor, Erin E. (Ryan) Thurber of Cranberry Township, PA, Joseph T. Piggott of Reading, PA, Autumn A. (Manuel) Cuevas of Newport News, VA, Ciera R. (Jordan) Feather of Manassas, VA, Zachary H. (Mia) Piggott of Newport News, VA, and great-grandchildren Aria M. Werner of Bangor, and Emmaryn F. Matthey of Cranberry Township, PA. Additionally, Mr. Piggott is survived by his late daughter's husband, Jim.
He was an avid model train enthusiast, building train platforms that entertained his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren through the generations.
A calling hour will be held on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 11:00 am to 12:00 Noon at the Finegan Funeral Home at 302 Heckman Street in Phillipsburg, NJ. A funeral service will then begin at 12:00 Noon at the funeral home with the interment at Fairmount Cemetery, also in Phillipsburg.
