Nicholas Michael Kavcsak, Sr.

Commander Nicholas Michael Kavcsak, Sr., United States Navy, Retired, 95, of Phillipsburg, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.

Born on September 1, 1927, in Perth Amboy, NJ, Nicholas was the son of the late Michael and Zsofi (Tollercsik) Kavcsak. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary (Petrilak) Kavcsak, who passed in 2005.

Nicholas was a Navy pilot whose 22 years of service included three wars; World War II, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring from the Navy in 1967, he spent 23 years working for the New Jersey Department of Corrections as a Business Manager. Nicholas loved his family and was a devout Byzantine Catholic, serving many years as a Cantor at Sts. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, in Phillipsburg, NJ.

Nicholas is survived by his children; Dr. Nicholas Kavcsak, Jr. and his wife, Donna, Mary Ellen Polachak and Anne Marie Midtgard, his five grandchildren, two of whose families he greatly enjoyed spending time with, his grandson George Polachak and his wife Kristin and their children and his granddaughter Kristina Hartman and her husband, Eric and their children, and his many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Nicholas was predeceased by his seven siblings and his two sons in law, Joseph Midtgard, who passed in 2005 and Dr. George Polachak, who passed in 2023.

A Viewing is scheduled for Sunday, July 2, 2023, from 2 to 4 PM at the Finegan Funeral Home, 302 Heckman Street, Phillipsburg, NJ. A Funeral Mass is set for 10 AM the following day, Monday, July 3, 2023, at Sts. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, 723 S Main St, Phillipsburg, NJ. The interment will then be at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, 5th Ave, Alpha, NJ.
